Biomolecular Science and Engineering



The Interdepartmental Graduate Program in Biomolecular Science and Engineering epitomizes the highly interdisciplinary approach to research and education that is the hallmark of UC Santa Barbara. In this context BMSE offers a unique mix for graduate training and research at the frontiers of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Bioengineering and Biomolecular Materials.

BMSE's enriching graduate training program is driven by many renowned research centers at UCSB including: Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, California NanoSystems Institute, Center for Polymers & Organic Studies, Institute for Collaborative Biotechnologies, Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics, Institute for Theoretical Physics, Materials Research Laboratory (an NSF-funded MRSEC), Mitsubishi Chemical Center Advanced Materials, and Neuroscience Research Institute.

Drawing its faculty from experts in half a dozen departments and two colleges, BMSE trains graduate students for leadership positions in the exploding fields represented our doctoral degree and two emphases:

  • PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
  • PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology with an emphasis in Biophysics and Bioengineering
